Air Rifle Buying Guide

What is an Air Rifle?

Air Rifles is rifles that shoot a small projectile with the use of, most commonly, a spring or compressed air also known as a PCP rifle. The projectile (ammunition) also known as pellets are either led or copper. Air rifles can have one of three means of propulsion: a spring-piston mechanism, high-pressure compressed air or a CO2 canister.

Spring-piston Mechanism

The traditional break-neck air rifle is what you will come across most often. By pulling down on the neck of the rifle in one motion, this will compress a powerful spring and piston inside the gun, drawing air into its compression chamber.

Under Lever

With an under lever it works like the traditional breakneck however, instead of breaking the neck of the rifle, you will pull down a second barrel that runs underneath the pain barrel. One of the greatest advantages of this is that the pain barrel, of which the pellet runs through, will hold its accuracy for much as longer as due to you not yanking on it over the years. A great example of this rifle would be the Gamo CFX Royal Air Rifle. The CFX ROYAL is a high-powered, fixed-barrel airgun with luxury features. The fixed-barrel system ensures greater accuracy, and the power of this airgun makes it suitable for shooting at distances of over 40 metres with great accuracy. This airgun comes with a wooden hunting-style butt, which makes it unique. Incorporates the SWA (SHOCK WAVE ABSORBER), a new nock exclusive to GAMO, which thanks to its 3 removable parts can dampen the recoil by 74% compared with a standard nock, and the TRUGLO system, a revolutionary fibre optic gun sight which produces the brightest fibre optics providing a bright and dependable sight picture in any light.

IGT System

One of the most well know brands for air rifles and pistols is Gamo and they came up with the very nifty system know as the IGT system (INERT GAS TECHNOLOGY) Gamo’s IGT Technology replaces the traditional main spring by a last generation pneumatic cylinder, improving the terminal velocity, providing a more consistent power level, reducing cocking efforts and lessening undesired vibrations.

PCP Air Rifles

PCP stands for Pre-Charged Pneumatics which is how this rifle ultimately is powered. You will fill this rifle a cylinder which is attached underneath the barrel of the rifle which will be your driving force behind the pellet. There a few methods of fill up your PCP rife, the simplest way is by using a hand pump however, this might take some time and effort. You can also use a pressurized air tanks do to this which can get a little complicated. PCP can be bolt action with a multi shot magazine. One of the best advantages of this system us the fact that there is no soring to deteriorate. Some to consider as well as that these rifles can become heavy. A great example of an affordable PCP rifle is the: Hatsan 10 Shot PCP Air Rifle - 4.5mm

Calibre

What are we referring to when mentioning calibre or cal?”

This is a good question and a commonly asked one. Calibre or cal refers to the size of the pellet or bullet. It is also is the specified nominal internal diameter of the gun barrel bore regardless of how or where the bore is measured and whether the finished bore matches that specification. It is measured in inches to an accuracy of hundredths or thousandths of an inch or in millimetres. For example, a ".45 calibre" firearm has a barrel diameter of roughly 0.45 inches (11 mm). Barrel diameters can also be expressed using metric dimensions. For example, a "9 mm pistol" has a barrel diameter of about 9 millimetres. Air rifles come in two calibres, 4.5mm and you 5.5mm. Your 5.5mm pellet us usually used in hunting very small game or varmint control.

Different pellets - there are many different pellets to choose from copper to led and different weights as well. Depending and what type of shooting you are wanting to do will determine what pellets you will be needing.
