Early astronomy optics were manufactured using lenses but Celestron perfected the parabolic mirror design and presented the reflector to the masses in the 90s. Now we have catadioptric optics, which use a combination of shaped mirrors and lenses. They are essentially a hybrid of the refractor and reflector types.
