The Mushroom Network Grow Stick - Brown Oyster is a mushroom native to Australia and New Zealand. While they are very similar to the common Grey Oyster mushroom, they are in fact a distinct species on their own. This species tends to have a larger and more tender stem than other oysters, meaning you can use the whole mushroom in your cooking!
These mushrooms are just as versatile as their cousins and are great in many dishes. They are not quite as sweet as other oyster mushrooms, which makes them a great meat substitute! An advantage of this mushroom is that with their thicker and softer stems, you can use the whole thing in your dish, maximizing the quantity of your harvest.
Brown Oyster Harvesting Instructions:
As with other oyster mushrooms, you will want to harvest your Brown Oyster mushrooms before they drop their spores - so this would be before the edge of the cap flattens out and becomes wavy. They have a short shelf life and should be consumed soon after harvesting.
Brown oysters should be harvested all at once in their clusters.
- Wash your hands with soap and water before harvesting
- Lightly grip the base of the cluster and with a twisting and pulling motion carefully separate the mushrooms from the substrate of the grow stick.
- Try not to take too much substrate off of the grow stick.
- Tape up your hole with some clear packaging tape as neatly as possible, with as little chance for air to enter the gaps.
