Please Note: Due to the time it takes to create and cultivate this product, there is an extended lead time of 4 - 6 working weeks.
To make your Shiitake Mushroom Dowels, first a Shiitake culture is grown. Then bits of the culture are transferred onto sterilized sorghum. Once the sorghum is fully colonized, the spawn is then transfer to dowels that have been soaked and sterilized.
A log measuring 12 cm in diameter and 60 cm long will need 50 to 60 dowels. The dowels are spaced 12 cm apart from each other over the whole log.
Shiitake Mushrooms are an edible mushroom native to Asia, they are a highly sought after delicacy due to their distinctive flavour and medicinal uses. They are a quintessential part of Asian cooking and cuisine.
Instructions for use - for log inoculation:
- Submerge the log in water for as long as it takes to sink
- Once it sinks, probably as long as 48 hours, then leave it in the shade for 1 day
- Drill 8mm wide holes, 30mm deep and knock in your 8 mm dowels
- Seal them with wax
- Place the log in full shade and water it once a week for 8 months
- Keep the log raised off the ground with a brick or piece of wood
- Submerge it again for 48 hours (8 months later)
- First growth in 8 - 14 days after soak
